This special 3R universal joint has a recessed body which allows installation in the old Buick/Cadillac CV's. The older CV's have a cap which needs to be installed after the universal joint is installed in the CV (that is why the 3R51-31 needs the recess). The standard 3R joint (without the recess) cannot be installed in these special CV units.
