LOCKING HUBS
Locking hubs also known as "free wheel hubs" are applied to mostly older four wheel drive vehicles, allowing the front wheels to spin freely when unlocked from the front axle. This is done to reduce the resistance of the front-portion of the drivetrain when four-wheel drive is not being used The hub and wheel is designed to engage or lock onto the axle, to be powered by the drivetrain in four-wheel drive. The hub can also disengage or unlock from the axle when four-wheel drive is not needed, this allows the front wheels to rotate freely within the hub.
